Billingual education

BG/BRG Klosterneuburg is a leading provider of bilingual education in Austria.

We offer an academic, well-rounded general education to local pupils aged 10-18 that fulfills the requirements of the Austrian national curriculum and leads to the Austrian school-leaving certificate (AHS Matura).

Within this framework, our "International Classes" offer subject teaching delivered in both English and German to a total of 50 students per year in the Lower School and 25 students per year in the Upper School.

Admission to these classes is by selection.

Programme Goal

All pupils attending an International Class are expected to attain subject fluency in English and German: English mother-tongue speakers are expected to be able to follow teaching in German and, within time, gain full academic proficiency in that language. Native German speakers are expected to reach a "near native" level of language in English. Subject specific vocabulary is built up gradually and interaction with our English-speaking pupils and teachers accelerates learning.

Multi-lingual competence

All pupils attending an International Class learn a second foreign language from Year 3 onwards (French or Latin), and a third foreign language from Year 5, (French, Latin or Spanish).

BG/BRG Klosterneuburg is part of the international CertiLingua school network: In their final year at our school, graduates of the International Class will have the opportunity to gain the internationally recognized CertiLingua award and thus document their multi-lingual competence.

Teaching Staff

In addition to a graduate qualification in the relevant subject, members of the Austrian teaching staff typically have a teaching degree in English, have taught in an English-speaking country or were themselves bilingually educated. The teaching staff is currently supported by a team of 10 native English-speaking graduate teachers, several of whom have completed further postgraduate training in content and language integrated learning (CLIL) methodology.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out in both English and German. In written tests, suitable measures are taken to ensure that the questions are comprehensible to all. Subject, rather than linguistic competence, shall determine grading at all times. It is a legal requirement to allow pupils to respond at any time in their mother tongue, should it be necessary.

Supplementary tuition in German

Non-German-speaking pupils attending our International Class Programme can receive extra language tuition in German appropriate to their age and language level.

Selection procedure

Admission to the International Class is by selection. In the last year of Junior School (year in which child turns 10) language ability in the mother tongue, creativity and logical thinking are assessed both in written and oral form by an external panel.

  • Priority is given to children who live in our school district.

  • All pupils must fulfill the general entrance requirements of an Austrian State Grammar School.

Potential candidates

  • - Native speakers of English, who display an aptitude for languages and an interest in becoming part of our German-speaking school community.

    - Native speakers of German, who show an aptitude for languages and a desire to work hard. Prior exposure to the English language (bilingual Junior School etc.) is certainly advantageous but not a requirement.

    - Bilingual children (German/English) and those who have attended an International School.

    - Children from abroad, whose parents are resident in Austria for professional reasons; a certain knowledge of German or English is required.

We are keen to attract both English and German-speaking pupils.

Application formalities

General application to the school takes place in the first two weeks of February prior to admission in September of that year. Candidates for the International Class selection procedure must note this on their application form. Parents or guardians are notified of the dates for the written and oral assessment (usually in March). The school welcomes all enquiries, and understands that applications from non-Austrian citizens may, in exceptional circumstances, fall outside the usual deadlines.

Programme fee

BG/BRG Klosterneuburg is a non-fee-paying Austrian state school.

The International Class is supported by the Education Authority of Lower Austria. To cover additional costs (English teaching materials, English text books etc.) the International Class carries a charge of €400.00 per year for each pupil. Payment is by standing order.

Lack of means is no bar to entry: financial assistance is available. The board of the International Class parents' committee has the administrative and financial oversight of these funds.
